CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif. - Farley, the narcotics K9 has been on the police force since late November. So far he's already unearthed 47 pounds of marijuana, 29 grams of methamphetamine, 29 grams of heroin and 11 grams of cocaine. Yet, Farley thinks he's just using his nose to get the chance to play with his tennis ball.

Detective David Moranz is his partner. Together they primarily use Farley's talents to inspect U.S. mail. However, they're also called out to a variety of incidents in Citrus Heights.

"When we smell a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, all we smell is peanut butter and jelly sandwich," said Moranz, explaining Farley's well-developed sense of smell. "But for the dog like Farley who has a sensitive nose, he smells the bread, he smells the wheat in the bread, he smells the sugar in the bread, he smells the jelly, he smells the peanut butter."

Farley demonstrated his technique Friday. In less than a minute, Farley was able to find a tiny strip of narcotic scented paper in a large conference room. His reward was a tennis ball.

As Moranz explained, Farley doesn't even know he's working.

"Farley doesn't know he's a drug dog," said Moranz. "Farley just thinks he's playing. He has no idea what he does for a job and what he does for our community and the police department in combating people in the illegal possession of controlled substances. He has no clue. As far as he cares, I think he thinks he's a dog and he gets to play all the time."
