A group of people are meeting and planning to peacefully protest at the Dixon City Council Meeting Tuesday night to ask for Vice Mayor Ted Hickman resignation.

Hickman wrote a controversial op-ed in the Independent Review late June calling for July to be called "Straight Pride Awareness Month" or SPAM. He called pride month, June, as LGBTQ-WTF month.

The Facebook group, "Recall Ted Hickman, Vice Mayor of Dixon, CA" has been calling on Hickman to resign.

"The majority of people are very disgusted this came from a public figure," said Julie Monson, who is part of the group asking for Hickman resignation. "We all understand everybody has their own opinions over everything we are not necessarily angry about his opinion, we are angry about the platform he used when speaking his opinion,"

On Tuesday, ahead of the city council meeting, they posted and called for peace and understanding.

Hickman has not responded to several requests made by ABC10 to speak with him about his op-ed. The Dixon Police Department posted to Facebook, stating they are aware of tonight's planned protests, and they have "every intention of helping make this a safe event."

The city council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Dixon City Hall.
