Dozens displaced in Yuba City following massive apartment fire

YUBA CITY, Calif. — About 80 people lost their homes Monday evening after a fire ripped through their Yuba City apartment complex, officials said.

The fire started around 4 p.m. on the first floor of the Sandpiper Cover Apartments and quickly spread up and out, according to Yuba City Fire officials. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to just nine units and knocked out the fire within half an hour.

Yuba City Fire Chief Jesse Alexander said their were no injuries in the fire.

Alexander said the apartments were not outfitted with fire sprinklers, because it is an older building that was built before they were required. It is still unclear if the apartments had smoke detectors.

Red Cross opened a shelter at the Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds at 442 Franklin Ave. for those who were displaced by an apartment fire in Yuba City. Officials said they anticipate about 80 people are in need of shelter.

Red Cross is giving food and beverages to those who were affected by the fire.
