After cutting-edge operation, couple welcomes 'miracle baby'

After two miscarriages and the stillborn birth of their daughter, Khae Saetern-Angeles and her husband Bobby Angeles say their son Matthew is a gift from above.

After two miscarriages and the stillborn birth of their daughter, Khae Saetern-Angeles and her husband Bobby Angeles say their son Matthew is a gift from above.

"He's a miracle. He's our miracle baby,” Khae said.

Still, Khae’s pregnancy wasn’t without its complications.

Doctor’s informed the couple that Matthew had a deadly amount of fluid in his chest. So, for the first time at the UC Davis Children’s Hospital, Dr. Shinjiro Hirose, performed fetal surgery.

"It was terrifying,” said Bobby, the baby’s father. “To think that something could happen and not being able to be there if I needed to."

Khae was awake when Dr. Shinjiro made a tiny incision in her abdomen. He used a small catheter to drain the fluid.

"I just prayed for everything to go right and for him to be ok,” Khae said.

On September 28, baby Matthew made his first appearance in the world. Now, after two months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at UC Davis he’s finally home and healthier than ever.

"As soon as we got in the car we took a picture of each other and with the baby, like we're on our way home, this is really happening,” Bobby said.

Khae added, "We had the baby on board sign, and to walk in and place him in his crib that was an amazing feeling."
