Dozens of cars broken into at Elk Grove apartment complex

Residents are surprised that this happened in this neighborhood but say they still feel safe. Though, some would like to see more security patrols in the area.

ELK GROVE, Calif. — At least 32 vehicles were broken into and burglarized at the Stonelake Apartment Homes complex in Elk Grove, according to the Elk Grove Police Department.

Residents there are shocked that so many vehicles were broken into at the same time. People who live in the neighborhood said they woke up Saturday morning to find shattered glass and broken windows all over the parking lot.

“I’ve done my research. This is a great neighborhood. Gated community, good neighbors, great atmosphere, parks for my kids to play around,” said Lyle Tomas, who recently moved into the apartments. "All that good stuff but was not expecting for people to smash cars.”

Matthew Chetner lives at the complex. His brother was visiting the complex when his window was smashed, Chetner said.

“Basically, they came in and hit everybody’s passenger front window. They used a tool and would just look through the glove compartment,” Chetner said.

The gated apartments are located near Elk Grove Boulevard and Interstate 5. The California Security Agency was hired to patrol the area, according to signs posted on the apartment gates.

While residents are surprised that this happened in this neighborhood, they say they still feel safe here. Although, some would like to see more patrols in the area.

Stonelake Apartment Homes refused ABC10’s request for comment. The Elk Grove Police Department is investigating the incident.
