Elk Grove Unified offers free meals to students during coronavirus closures | Update

The school district is offering a drive-through meal service for all of their families set up at 20 locations for each day the district is closed.

ELK GROVE, Calif. -- The Elk Grove Unified School Distrct is extending its drive-thru meal service to add an additional seven pick-up locations while students. 

Schools in the district have shut their doors while the coronavirus pandemic sweeps the globe.

Students in Elk Grove now have a way to get free lunch and breakfast while their school district is shut down due to the coronavirus [COVID-19].

On average, the district is at a 55% free or reduced lunch rate, but at 13 of their schools, their free or reduced lunch rate is much higher, hitting around 78% or more.

"It's great that we're coming through and we're able to drive through and able to pick up breakfast and lunch!" said Monica Walker, a parent. "It really helps out."

The Elk Grove Unified School District is offering a drive-through meal service for all of their families set up at 13 of their schools from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day the district is closed.

"It does help in a sense, they enjoy it more than what they kind of get at home," Laura Perez, a parent, said.

Parents are asked to stay in their cars while they provide both breakfast and lunch bagged meals for each student in the car. Students need to be present to get their meal.

The district has nearly 63,000 students and 7,000 staff members that were told to stay home from school for the week in the state's fifth largest school district, all because of the coronavirus.

"We just want to make sure that we're taking care of our families," Michelle Drake, the Director of Food and Nutrition Services for the Elk Grove Unified School District said.

Elk Grove Unified came up with a drive-through meal service plan to make sure that kids aren't missing any meals while they're on a break.
