11-year-old girl dies after being hit by suspected DUI driver in Fairfield

Officials said the child was in the crosswalk when she was hit.

FAIRFIELD, Calif. — An 11-year-old girl died after being hit days ago by a suspected DUI driver, school officials said Monday.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of our students, Terra Star Jackson, who was involved in an accident last week. Our school and community mourn the loss of a bright young soul, and we extend our sincerest condolences to her family during this trying time," the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District said in a statement.

Police said Jackson was in the crosswalk when she was hit by a car and left with life-threatening injuries. The collision happened around 8 a.m. at East Tabor Avenue and Blossom Avenue March 23.

Police arrested the driver, 32-year-old Elena McGraw-Ogans, on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle while impaired and child endangerment since she had child passengers with her. According to a news release, police believe she was under the influence of alcohol and drugs when the crash happened.

"As we reflect on the life of our student, Terra Star Jackson, let us also celebrate the positive impact she had on her friends, family, teachers, and community. We will honor her memory by continuing to strive for a safe and nurturing environment for all of our students," the school district said.

The school district is providing mental health services to all students an staff who need support with counselors available on campus.
