'Flea Fiasco' halts postal service delivery in Rosemont neighborhood

USPS sent a letter out to residents informing them that a mail carrier and a manager received multiple bites from fleas.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat will stop the U.S. Postal Service…but fleas will.

It's been more than a week since residents in the Rosemont neighborhood received mail. The postal service says a flea infestation along the 3600 to 3600 block of Thorn Hill Drive is a health hazard and can't deliver. About 18 homes have to pick up the mail at their local post office.

The USPS sent a letter out to residents informing them that a mail carrier and a manager received multiple bites from fleas. Residents of Rosemont tell ABC10 they haven't noticed a flea problem. Many homeowners called the USPS to find out when mail service will resume, but were told to contact Sacramento County for information.

USPS spokesperson Meiko Patton told ABC10 the postal service was seeking assistance from Sacramento County Supervisor Don Nottoli. The flea problem is a first for Nottoli. He says there isn’t really a department that manages flea problems. Nottoli also says the problem flea area is on private property and it’s not something the county can do much about.

Following our interview with Nottoli, the Sacramento Post Office sent ABC10 the following statement:

“Beginning today, the Sacramento Post Office will resume delivery to postal customers in the 3600 to 3800 block of Thornhill Drive. Mail delivery was interrupted due to flea infestation. In an attempt to continue providing outstanding postal services to our customers, our letter carriers will apply flea repellent prior to delivery for these 18 homes affected. We hope the repellent works and that residents will take action to remedy the flea infestation.”
