Folsom Prep Elementary shocks parents and staff with closing announcement

An email was sent to parents late Friday afternoon at the start of their summer break addressing the closing.

FOLSOM, Calif. — School’s out for Folsom Preparatory School not just for summer, but apparently forever.

A letter was recently sent to parents alerting them that the school is closing due to low enrollment numbers and a lease expiring in May 2020. Folsom Prep was a staple of the Folsom community for 25 years. The official closing date, as of now, is Friday, Aug. 9.

Jaya Badiga’s son attends Folsom Prep. She was told about the closing on Friday, June 28, just six weeks before school was supposed to start.

"I understand financial and economic downturns, but this is not the way to handle it," Badiga said.

Folsom Preparatory School is run by the private school educational company Cadence Education. In a statement to ABC10, and in their letter to parents, Cadence Education emphasizes helping families with the transition from Folsom Prep to their next educational destination.

"We are committed to working closely with you over the coming weeks and providing any support we can to you through this transition, including ensuring that all registration fees or tuition credit balances are returned to you," the letter states.

A community meeting regarding the school’s closure is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, at the Folsom Library, 411 Stafford St.
