'I don't really feel as if anything has changed' | Slow change lamented after Clark shooting

"I feel like there have been a lot of failed attempts. Ultimately, I think a lot could be done, but it just starts with the city leaders. It starts with the mayor."

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento community came together today at Genesis Church to support the family of Stephon Clark.

Church leaders, artists, family, and friends all gathered to pray and be with the Clark family.

Many were divided about how far they felt the city of Sacramento has come since the shooting.

"I don't really feel as if anything has changed," explained Johnny Coleman, who attended the service. "I feel like there have been a lot of failed attempts. Ultimately, I think a lot could be done, but it just starts with the city leaders. It starts with the mayor."

Coleman highlighted the frustration his community feels toward the police; he estimates he's been stopped by police between 30 to 40 times.

"Ultimately, they want to know 'Am I on probation or parole?'" recalled Coleman. "It's the first question they ask before they even ask my name, and, when I don't have any guns or drugs and obviously I don't have anything on my record, they want to try to justify the reason they stopped me by issuing a citation... ultimately I'm the real victim in that situation."

Karina McDaniels, who also attended the service, said she has seen far too much violence and just wants to see it end.

"I would like to see the black on black crime stop - quick," explained McDaniels. "It's so much killing. I've lost so much people that I love and care about. I mean the pain in me is just so intense."

Both Coleman and McDaniels said they believe change is possible but admit, it has been slow.

"This is a beautiful city and people say there's beautiful people here and it's a beautiful struggle," said Coleman. "And I think as a capitol city, there's a chance to lead by example. And as of now, I don't feel like we're doing that."
