'It's the hardest thing': Family of woman killed in hit-and-run searching for driver

The family of the Carmichael woman wants closure and for someone to come forward.

A family is asking for help to find the driver involved in a hit-and-run of a Carmichael woman early Sunday morning.

Crystal Shrum was out with friends celebrating her 26th birthday, when the group split up and she decided to walk back.

Her cousin Katie Cameron was with her that night, before the group split up.

"As we leave, we came up to flares on the road, CHP cars and vehicles everywhere," Cameron said. "That's when my boyfriend goes, 'I think someone must've died, they're out and they're starting an investigation.'"

According to CHP, Shrum was walking on Fair Oaks Boulevard when a grey sedan hit her and drove off.

"Just know, I passed by her body and looked at that tarp. I didn't know at the time," Cameron said. "She was just under there on the cold wet ground for how long, I don't know. It's the hardest thing."

She says the family wants closure and for someone to come forward.

"[What] I really want out of this is that people don't make assumptions about what happened that night," Cameron said. "They weren't there. I will never get her back and they will go get to live their lives without any justice. That's unacceptable to all of us."

CHP says no witnesses have come forward.
