Lodi quickly becoming a vacation destination hot spot

What has helped to spike the Lodi area's tourist boom was being named Wine Region of the Year in 2015 by Wine Enthusiast magazine.

Alexander Singh and his girlfriend made the trip to Lodi from San Ramon.

"I always come for the pie and food. And, of course the wine," said Singh."

Singh was at the popular Michael David Winery on State Highway 12, where tourists are flocking from as far away as Europe.

"We're marketing all over. Of course, we expanded our ground out here to accommodate the bigger crowds on the weekends. We get thousands of people coming through and even mid-week it's busy now," said Dave Phillips, co-owner of Michael David Winery in Lodi.

What has helped to spike the Lodi area's tourist boom was being named Wine Region of the Year in 2015 by Wine Enthusiast magazine.

"And I think that, in and of itself, really lent credibility to the message that we have been pushing all along; that Lodi really is a premiere wine-country destination," said Nancy Beckman, President & CEO, Visit Lodi.

Those benefiting from the boom include places like Weibel Family Vineyards and Winery and its tasting room downtown on North School Street. It features 12 different flavored sparkling wines. It's been so successful, they're expanding with a new location nearby soon.

"People are starting to realize that this is not only a neat little friendly place to come to, it's affordable and we have the quality," said Weibel Winery tasting room manager Brenda Hunter.

Tricia Descent opened her Poppy Sister Inn Bed and Breakfast two years ago. She says each month, more and more people are making reservations to stay the night in her early 1900's era, two-story vacation retreat. She remodeled the Victorian from top to bottom at it's West Oak Street location.

"I am shocked at how busy it's gotten. And that people are coming from every country, everywhere," said Descent.

Bottom line, like a fine wine, Lodi appears to be aging for the better.
