LODI, Calif. — One person is dead and the Lodi Sheriff's Department is investigating following a fatal shooting in the city.
The shooting happened near the Harney lane on-ramp to Highway 99 (not far from the area's Costco) around 2 p.m. Saturday.
Deputies said the situation started in Acampo, where they tried to make a traffic stop but the driver refused. Instead of stopping, the driver sped up on Highway 99, finally stopping after running over a spike strip set up by California Highway Patrol.
Shortly after stopping, the driver got out of the car and tried to run from law enforcement. Shortly after a K-9 was sent out, the driver pointed a gun at deputies, the department said. It was at this point that deputies fired, shooting the driver.
That person later died at the scene of injuries and a passenger in the car was arrested. At this point the investigation is ongoing, but, on Sunday, deputies confirmed that the suspect's gun, a .25 caliber semi-automatic Beretta, was loaded.
