Water park and jobs could be coming to Manteca

Manteca City Council will hold a hearing Tuesday for public comment on a proposed water park resort, Great Wolf Lodge. The resort is projected to employ 500 permanent workers and 1,500 construction jobs and attract nearly 500,000 visitors a year.

The Manteca city council is considering a proposal for a water resort that would not only offer relief from Valley heat, but would potentially add 500 permanent jobs and roughly 1,500 construction jobs to the area.

Great Wolf Lodge, the proposed resort, feature a 310,000 square-foot hotel with 500 rooms, a family entertainment center, meeting rooms, restaurant/food court and 100,000 square-foot indoor water park. It is projected to attract almost 500,00 visitors yearly, generating ‘significant new tax revenues,’ according to a city report.

The Manteca City Planning Commission scheduled a public hearing and and is expected to provide a recommendation to the Manteca City Council at its regular meeting st 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26. The proposed site for the resort is at the eastern end of Daniels Street, north of State Route 120 and west of Costco.

The next step would be a council vote on whether to approve the project, which is slated to be taken in March. If approved, work is expected to begin this summer and be completed by spring 2020.

The city’s plan to secure a water resort dovetailed with the needs of Great Wolf Lodge, a chain of water resorts with 14 locations in the United States and one in Canada.

“Great Wolf identified Manteca as their preferred location due to the readiness of the site, its location, the city’s labor force, and proximity to other community and visitor attractions, such as Big League Dreams,” according to the city report.
