Deadly crash has Modesto police puzzled, seeking more witnesses

Modesto police said they don't know why the man was in the roadway, outside of a marked crosswalk.

MODESTO, Calif. — A deadly crash in Modesto still has police puzzled and looking for answers.

Police say the crash happened at Coffee Road and Ensenada Drive just before 9:30 p.m. on Saturday night. Authorities said a nearby officer came across the scene and found out that a pedestrian was hit by a car.

The officer found a man down in the roadway with major injuries, but, despite attempts to save the man's life, he died. He was identified as a Psyoth Sao, 36.

Police believe Sao was in the roadway and outside of the marked crosswalk when he was hit by the car, identified as a 2015 Nissan Sentra, however, they say they don't know why Sao was outside of the crosswalk when he was hit.

Police say they got conflicting statements as to how Sao ended up in the roadway and why he was there.

The driver who allegedly hit him was identified as a Larry Lindsey of Riverbank. Police said he stayed on the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Lindsey was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of a narcotic, but investigators are still piecing together whether or not it played a role in the crash.

Investigators are still looking for witnesses to the crash and believe a driver in an unknown truck may have witnessed the crash.

Anyone with information can call Officer Randy Dadeuchel at 209-572-9592 or Crime Stoppers at 209-541-4636.
