A Modesto family is without a home after a house fire caused significant damage to their duplex unit, Wednesday afternoon.

Multiple fire crews responded to the scene at the duplex, located in the 400 block of Chamise Road.

According to the Modesto Fire Department, crews were initially called to the home just after 4:30 p.m. for a reported car fire. When firefighters arrived, the blaze had spread from the car to the garage.

The garage of the first unit was completely destroyed, with flames reaching the attic, displacing the family that lived in the home. All family members inside the involved duplex unit were able to escape safely with their pet cat.

Firefighters worked quickly enough to limit the second unit to only smoke damage. The American Red Cross is assisting both families. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Crews with Modesto, Ceres and Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection all responded to the fire.
