One person is dead and a Sacramento Police Department officer is in the hospital after a morning confrontation.

The Sacramento Police Department said officers were responding to a call of a man wielding a knife near Del Paso Boulevard and Edgewater Road when the suspect became uncooperative.

One officer was injured during the confrontation with the suspect. Both the suspect and officer were sent to area hospitals. While the officer’s condition is still unknown, SPD confirmed that the suspect has died.

The incident started around 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 11. SPD reported receiving calls of a black male in his 50s or 60s acting irrational and agitated, while brandishing a knife.

Upon arrival, officers found the man wandering along Del Paso Boulevard. When the suspect spotted police, he charged at the police vehicle. Another patrol vehicle approached and the suspect fled, with officers pursuing. One officer got out of a car and gave chase, injuring himself.

During the pursuit, the suspect refused to listen to the officer’s commands. Towards the end of the chase, the suspect turned to officers, raised his knife and charged towards them. Two officers discharged their weapon at the suspect, eventually killing him.
