We've all been there, traveling at the posted speed, and then a law enforcement vehicle speeds by with no emergency lights on. What's up with that?

Today's Why Guy question is another query concerning local law enforcement.

We've all been there, traveling at the posted speed, and then a law enforcement vehicle speeds by with no emergency lights on. What's up with that?

"There are situations where we are approaching a dangerous situation or a bad guy and we want to have the lights off and stay stealth," Sacramento Police Department Sgt. Vance Chandler said.

"The officer may be trying to overtake another vehicle and once the contact is made, then they'll turn on the enforcement lights," Eulogio Ceja of the CHP added.

So, what if the law enforcement vehicle is determined to be speeding for no official reason?

"Every officer is aware of our policies and every officer is aware of the liability if they're outside of our policies," Chandler said.
