People frustrated over sale of old Dry Creek Elementary building

The school opened in 1876 but shut down in 2014 due to failing infrastructure.

People showed their frustrations during a school board meeting over the sale of the old Dry Creek Elementary School building.

The school opened in 1876, but shut down in 2014 due to failing infrastructure.

"It means a lot to me and my entire family," said Kathleen Pruett-Shingleton. "We've had four generations from our family go to this school."

Pruett-Shingleton didn't know the building was for sale until she saw Laura Bullard's Facebook post.

Bullard also went to the school and saw the for sale sign while driving by a few days ago.

"This school is a big part of the community," Bullard said.

According to the school district, the original buildings from 1876 no longer exist, and the sale has been discussed for years in meetings with no opposition.

"There's no opposition when nobody knows about it," Bullard said. "You have a dialogue, you let people know. If nothing else, maybe it would be the same conclusion but at the same time maybe there would be new ideas."

Bullard asked people to show support at the school board meeting Thursday night.

Everyone who spoke during public comment wanted to save the school. Some of them want to see the school turned into a historical site, part of a park, or even another school.

However, many of them left in the middle of the meeting angry saying they feel like their school will be gone.

The school district says money from the sale of the building will go to improving existing facilities.
