How a $425 substitute salary in Rocklin compares to regional schools

Out of concern for a potential teacher's strike, Rocklin Unified School District is offering a $425 Special Circumstance rate for substitute teachers should a strike occur.

Out of concern for a potential teacher's strike, Rocklin Unified School District is offering a $425 Special Circumstance salary for substitute teachers should a strike occur.

This is far more than the $90 per day salary Level 1 substitutes are usually paid, and still more than the $110 for Level 2 substitutes, those with three or more consecutive years of work experience.

This $425 pay rate is comparable to the average salary of a Rocklin Unified teacher per day. According to Diana Capra, Chief of Communications and Community Engagement for the Rocklin Unified School District [RUSD], the average teacher makes $456 a day.

"Regarding the rate of $425 Special Circumstance Substitute day rate: As you know, on a normal day when a teacher is out sick or takes a personal day, etc, they still get paid," Capra said

A strike is no normal day. The difference during a strike is that a teacher who strikes, does not get paid and what they aren’t getting paid is offsetting this special rate of pay we are offering substitutes...something that would be necessary during a strike to ensure schools remain open and safe for student learning."

Comparably, if a teacher strike were to occur, this special rate would easily make Rocklin Unified the best place for substitutes to work for, in terms of pay.

Comparisons are based on the rate of day-to-day credentialed substitute teachers working a single, full day. Other variances such as extended assignment, priority site assignment, retiree status, special training for handicapped students were not included.
