New Placer County sports center to generate $12 million to economy

ROSEVILLE, Calif. —

The City of Roseville broke ground at the old Placer Valley Fairgrounds Wednesday, beginning construction on the Placer Valley Sports and Events Center.

The 160,000-square-foot event center, which rivals the size of the Sacramento Convention Center, will be large enough to house 12 full-size indoor basketball courts. It is expected to generate $12 million to the economy in south Placer County.

"The Fairgrounds have been for years a giant question mark," said Kirk Uhler, chairman of the Placer Valley Board of Supervisors. "‘What are we gonna do? We know it’s potentially a tremendous asset to the County, to the City of Roseville, how do we properly utilize it?’”

Uhler said the events center would properly utilize the space by giving residents of other counties a reason to go to the Foothill communities and enjoy the open space.

"[This is] millions of dollars in new sports-related tourism that will be coming in every year,” Uhler said. “Which then allows us to provide a higher level of service to the City of Roseville and Placer County."
