Police officers called to check on a possible abandoned animal at a downtown Sacramento apartment complex were not expecting to come face-to-face with a large pig.

According to police, the pig was found in an empty unit on the second floor of the apartment complex. It is unclear how long the animal was by itself.

Authorities say animal abandonment is a misdemeanor in California. Police did not identify the apartment complex where the pig was found. It is unclear if any charges will be pursued against the pig’s owner.

The officers were able to bring the pig to the Front Street Animal Shelter. The shelter told ABC10 this type of pig is not typically known as being a domestic pet. However, based on the condition of its hooves, the pig had not been outdoors for a while.

The pig is doing well and was in good condition when it arrived at the shelter. From there, the animal was taken in by Yolo County Animal Services. The animal will get to live out its life on a local refuge. It will not be adopted out and will not be making its way onto any plates.
