Event held to give back to Stephon Clark’s neighborhood

Friday is the last night for “Summer Nights of Impact” in Meadowview.

The event was organized following the shooting and death of the 22-year-old Stephon Clark, who was from the neighborhood.

Clark was shot and killed by police on March 18, in the backyard of his grandparents’ home. He was unarmed.

"I think there's multiple things that happened," Berry Accius, organizer. "Stephon Clark was the breaking point, but I think the community, when we're called in for action, the action is here. No more talking. Let's really show what true investment is in a community that's underserved. And here we are with this investment."

At the event, organizers are offering free haircuts, hair-dos, eye glass adjustments, healthy cooking demos, and much more. Regina Hubbard was there with her grandchildren.

"It means keeping the kids out of trouble," Hubbard said. "Me coming up here and doing different stuff instead of sitting in the house and doing nothing."

Accius wants to make sure people are taken care of before the start of the new school year.

"I think the community deserves it," Accius said. "I want to make sure the young boys and young women in this community get nice haircuts and can look presentable when they start school as well help the families out."

He also hopes this event can set an example for other communities.

"I think when people see this, they need to know we need to do this in all communities that are underserved. And Meadowview, we hope we can continue to do this, and do this as a legacy," Accius said.
