Meals on Wheels in need of volunteers

Around this time of year, Meals on Wheels could use volunteers more than ever as more families seek help.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — You don't need a cape to be a Superhero in the Sacramento area. It's as easy as being a volunteer at Meals on Wheels [MoW] by ACC.

Around this time of the year, the organization can use volunteers more than ever. There's usually a spike in participant applications after the holidays, so the number of families seeking assistance increases around this time of year.

In order to meet that demand, it's important to have volunteers on hand.

"I've been volunteering here for the last year, but for Meals on Wheels, a total of nine years," said Shirley, a volunteer at MoW. "It's very rewarding. The people that we see are often very lonely and don't have much to eat. Every time I go out, people are very grateful for anyone who shows up at their door."

ABC10 was fortunate enough to join Shirley for a ride along on Monday morning. She made multiple stops for her deliveries, and it's clear that the participants are grateful for the service.

"I'm diabetic, and I need that nutrition because I don't have much food. It means a lot. I really appreciate it more than you think," stated Diane, a participant with the program.

During the last fiscal year, MoW delivered approximately 2,000 meals per day. Thanks to the currently registered 450 volunteers, which is a number that continues to increase.

During March, MoW likes to recruit more volunteers in preparation for the summer months.
