WILTON, Calif — A grass fire broke out in a small community to the southwest of Sacramento, Monday afternoon.
The 10-acre fire ballooned to 67 acres near Hobday Road. Residents of the small ranch community reacted quickly by informing one another and hosing down their properties.
Michael Daves’ aunt’s home was one of seven threatened by the flames. The field directly across her property was engulfed by the fire. Daves told ABC10 he drove to the home and began to hose it down and gather the horses in case they needed to evacuate.
“If [the fire] got into the yard we were going to move [the horses] over. We were going to take the horses next door and let them be safe. We came over and got her dogs out of the house, she also has some exotic birds, so we had those ready to load. Our vehicles were running, we were ready to evacuate if needed,” said Daves.
Cpt. Andrew Lemos with the Wilton Fire Protection District said the seven structures threatened by the fire prompted a quick response.
“We augmented the response to 10 engines, five water tenders, a helicopter, and a bulldozer. We were able to contain the fire at 67-acres with one outbuilding lost,” Lemos said.
The outbuilding turned out to be a shed. The fire, named the Hobday Fire, was fully contained in less than two hours. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
