Owner of Sacramento's iconic Leatherby's Family Creamery laid to rest in front of hundreds

Dave "Daddy Dave" Leatherby was often described as a "lover of all people." That's probably the best way to sum up the life of the founder of a Sacramento staple.

CARMICHAEL, Calif. — On Monday morning, hundreds of people came out to honor and celebrate the life of Dave Leatherby, the patriarch of Sacramento's legendary Leatherby's Family Creamery. Family, friends, and members of the community filled Our Lady of Assumption Parish for the two-hour memorial service.

Dave "Daddy Dave" Leatherby was often described as a "lover of all people." That's probably the best way to sum up the life of the founder of Leatherby's Family Creamery, an iconic ice cream parlor in the Sacramento area.

"He saw Christ in every single person,"  said Dave's son, Alan Leatherby. "He engaged every person, and he was truly a lover of all people,"

People who worked at the creamery echoed the same sentiments.

"The one thing they teach you when you work there is that you have to smile. That's always been their motto...love everybody, love the customers like they're your family," said Danielle Leatherby, a former employee and wife of Leatherby's grandson Jake Leatherby.

More than anything, his family wants his legacy to live on.

"I hope his legacy will be that we continue to be faithful to God, to be generous to the poor and the needy, and that's all of us, because we're all in need in one way or another," Alan said.
