SACRAMENTO, Calif —

Sacramento State University broke ground this week on the "Hornet Commons," a housing complex for upperclassmen students.

The new student housing facility will hold 284 apartments, that break down to 212 four-bedrooms units, 60 two-bedroom units, and 12 one-bed studio apartments.

What amenities do the Hornet Commons include?

The apartment complex will have a swimming pool, a cafe, fitness center and a community room. Jim Reinhart, executive director of University Enterprises Inc., said that the coffee shop will also have prepared meals, too.

How much did the housing complex cost to build?

The housing project will cost $164 million.

How much is rent?

Prices have not yet been determined, but Reinhart said an amount would be calculated closer to the completion of construction.

What housing is currently available at Sac State?

Before the Hornet Commons, there were eight on-campus housing buildings that had 2,100 beds. The Hornet Commons will replace the 400-bedroom Upper Eastside Lofts, which also housed upper-division students.

The campus will gain 700 beds once construction is completed.

What are other projects are under construction at Sac State?

The Ernest E. Tschannen Science Complex and the Welcome Center are other Sac State’s current construction projects underway.

The science complex is a $91 million project that will include a planetarium, an observatory and a green terrace. The complex is scheduled to open during the 2019 fall semester.

The Welcome Center will be used for university news conferences, campus tours and will house the University Transportation and Parking offices. The center is scheduled to open during the 2020 spring semester.
