Sacramento Beer Week celebrates 10 years

With new and returning events, Sacramento Beer Week continues to grow and celebrate breweries in the Sacramento region.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — Sacramento Beer Week is back for its tenth year of introducing brew lovers to local breweries and new releases.

The 10-day event runs from April 26 to May 5. It includes beer releases, food and beer pairings, and many other celebrations of beer in the Sacramento region.

Kate Whelan, director of Sacramento Beer Week, said the event is the way for Sacramento to celebrate and promote Sacramento beers in the region. There will be over 150 events to highlight 70 regional breweries.

"When we started Sac Beer Week there were around six or seven breweries and now there are over 70 breweries in the Sacramento area," Whelan said.

This year's big, new event is the closing dinner, Whelan said. The Capitol Brewers Dinner will be held at Beatnik Studios May 5, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The dinner costs around $100 for a five-course prix fixe menu with beer pairings. So far the chefs for this dinner include:

Whelan said that there were so many new events that she didn't want to list them and possibly miss some. She said that the breweries do a good job of creating new events and keeping events that people love.

A few of the fan-favorite events are:

Each event has its own rules on parking, whether kids should come, cover charge and other things you need to know. Whelan said the best way to know all the information for an event is by checking its website.

Whelan said that Sacramento is becoming a place recognized for its quality and variety of beer. She said that although other California cities like San Diego get a lot of hype as a beer destination, Sacramento is beginning to be seen as a competitor in the beer scene.

"Quite often we aren't seen as a beer destination; we are undervalued in that regard," Whelan said. "I don't think people are seeing it yet, but they will."

Whelan said she highly suggests people create an account on the Sacramento Beer Week website so they can create a list of all the events they want to go to.

"There is just a lot of new stuff going on this year," Whelan said.

The full list of events can be found here.
