‘Legacy Weekend’ for Stephon Clark planned to mark 1-year anniversary of his death

The family said the four days of events are intended to be free of politics in an effort to focus on remembering Clark and healing impacted communities.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — Next Monday marks one year since Stephon Clark, an unarmed black man, was shot and killed by Sacramento police in his grandmother's backyard. Leading up to the day, Clark's family is hosting different events to honor his memory.

The Stephon Clark Legacy Weekend was announced the day Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said she would not charge the two officers who fatally shot Clark.

Several protests have erupted since the DA's decision was announced, including multiple sit-ins at the Sacramento Police Department by Black Lives Matter.

DA: 84 protesters arrested in East Sac will not be charged

On the Monday following Schubert's announcement, 84 people, including journalists and clergy, were arrested at a protest in East Sacramento. The next day, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg ended the weekly city council meeting early abruptly after public speakers repeatedly went over the three-minute time limit.

Schubert later announced that she would not charge the 84 people arrested during the protest.

Clark's family said the four days of events are intended to be free of politics in an effort to focus on remembering Clark and healing impacted communities.

At the Teen Summit, many of them shared their frustrations and sadness over situations beyond their control.

"My ethnicity, my area code, and poverty," said Trayzell White who lives in the Meadowview neighborhood.

He said growing up there you had to live a certain way.

"When you see the cops, do everything that they say," White said. "They say get on the ground just get on the ground and don't do anything else and just lay on the ground and listen."

White's friend Ana Taukolo also showed up to make sure the voices of the youth are being heard.

"What I believe is that what youth have to say are important especially when it comes to the over-policing of color, police brutality, and the targeting of young black men," Taukolo said.

Legacy Weekend schedule:
