STOCKTON, Calif. — A newborn was found alive, wrapped up inside of a dumpster in Stockton Tuesday morning, according to Stockton Police.

The baby boy was found in a dumpster on Village Green Drive just before 11:45 a.m. after police received a tip. The newborn was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Investigators say they located the baby's teenage mother near the scene. She has been taken to the hospital for undisclosed treatment, according to police. Her identity has not been released.

The baby is doing well at the hospital and is in the custody of Child Protective Services, police said.

In Stockton, newborns can be surrendered at any firehouse or hospital emergency room within 72 hours of being born, without fear of prosecution as long as the child shows no signs of abuse or neglect.

Police are investigating and ask anyone with information to call the department at 209-937-8377, the investigation unit at 209-937-8323 or Crime Stoppers at 209-946-0600.
