San Joaquin sheriff's deputy shot 19-year-old who 'ejected an unspent round' outside of patrol car

The deputy opened fire because he said he believed the man was going to use a weapon, according to sheriff's officials.

STOCKTON, Calif. — UPDATE: 3:05 p.m.

The man a San Joaquin County Sheriff's Deputy Monday evening was identified as 19-year-old Johnnie Earl Ross, officials confirmed.

A sheriff's deputy and Stockton Police Officer were surveilling Ross on the Montclair Street for an outstanding arrest warrant on a gun-related charge. Ross allegedly walked up to the deputy and officer while they were sitting in a car, showed his gun and "ejected an unspent round," sheriff's officials said.

The deputy then shot Ross, and Ross ran into a house on Montclair Street.

Ross was later arrested after law enforcement served a search warrant on the home. Investigators also found a loaded gun inside the home as well as ammunition.

Ross was taken to the hospital, where he is currently recovering from the gun shot.

A San Joaquin County Sheriff's Deputy shot a man who officials said he believed was armed with a weapon in Stockton on Monday night, officials confirmed.

The deputy, who was investigating an incident in the 2400 block of Montclair Street, said he was approached by a man who he thought was carrying a weapon, sheriff's officials said

The deputy opened fire because he said he believed the man was going to use a weapon, according to sheriff's officials.

It's unclear what the man was holding in his hand when he allegedly approached the deputy.

San Joaquin Sheriff's officials said the deputy involved was not hurt, and the man was transported to the local hospital.

The San Joaquin Sheriff's Office, San Joaquin County District Attorney, The Stockton Police Department and Department of Justice are working together to investigate this case.
