Armed suspect fires into ceiling of Stockton Bank of America during attempted robbery

Police said the suspicious device that was also being investigated outside the bank was detonated and deemed safe.

STOCKTON, Calif. — The Stockton Police Department is investigating an attempted armed robbery at a Stockton bank.

On Tuesday just before 1:00 p.m., an armed suspect walked into the Bank of America at the 400 block of North Wilson Way where he fired several gunshots into the ceiling. Police say the suspect then ran out of the bank, leaving without any money.

As police responded to the bank, several officers found a suspicious device outside. Officers called the bomb squad to investigate. Joe Silva, Stockton police spokesperson, said the device was detonated and deemed safe.

Officers were able to get all of the bank employees and customers outside of the bank. At this time, there have been no reported injuries as a result of the incident.

Silva says this investigation remains active as officers are interviewing witnesses and looking at video surveillance to obtain a description of the suspect.

“Right now, the main focus is trying to identify the suspect so that we can hold that person or persons accountable for their actions,” Silva told ABC10.

The Stockton Police Department encourages anyone with information to contact (209) 946-0600.

In response to an inquiry from ABC10, Bank of America sent the following statement, adding that the location will be closed Wednesday.

"The safety of customers and employees is our highest priority. We are working closely with law enforcement, and will keep this financial center closed tomorrow. Clients can still use onsite ATMs or go to nearby branches located within a few miles in the meantime. Given this is an active criminal investigation, we defer any additional comments to local law enforcement."
