STOCKTON, Calif. — San Joaquin County Sheriff's deputies arrested a homicide suspect Tuesday evening. He had been on the run for close to a week after allegedly killing someone over sneakers.

"Yes. It appears that it was a robbery gone bad...a robbery turned into a shooting," said Andrea Lopez with the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office. "Ruvalcaba is our shooter in this case."

A day later, police said Ruvalcaba wrecked his car on Keyes Road just north of Turlock. When people went to go help he allegedly told them he had a gun and took off running.

"We have been looking for Mr. Ruvalcaba 24/7 night and day, and this is just great investigative work and us being persistent," said Lopez.

On July 9 deputies were able to track Ruvalcaba to Stockton's La Quinta Inn on March Lane. After a tense standoff with the SWAT team that lasted for several hours, Ruvalcaba finally surrendered to Stanislaus County deputies.

"We also had assistance from the Stockton Police Department with their helicopter in the air and hostage negotiators," said Lopez. "Businesses nearby had to be evacuated for everyone's safety. Other people staying at that hotel had to be evacuated. We just wanted to make sure that this ended safely."

Thankfully, no one was hurt in Tuesday's standoff. Deputies say Ruvalcaba was taken to the San Joaquin County Jail. ABC10 is told he will face homicide and robbery charges.
