'My son was my best friend' | Stockton mother seeks closure after teen son killed over weekend

Rochelle Valverde says her son was a "goofball" who loved his mother. Valverde is left looking for closure after her son was killed over the weekend.

STOCKTON, Calif. — A mother is mourning after her son was killed over the weekend in Stockton.

Rochelle Valverde was devastated after she lost her 17-year-old son Rafael Chavez in a shooting on Sunday.

"I'm still waiting him to jump out a bush and tell us whats going on," said Valverde.

She along with family and friends flocked to where Chavez was killed for a vigil on Tuesday night. Valverde still remembers her son as a "goofball", who loved his mother and was always there for his family.

"My son was my best friend, and, he's the biggest mama's boy that I've ever known. To have all this support, is so warming," said Rochelle Valverde, Chavez' mother.

The vigil was adorned with candles, balloons, and more than a hundred people gathered in solidarity to celebrate the life of loved one taken far too soon.

Chavez was an athlete at Lincoln High School, before transferring to Chavez High School. His mother says he was always the life of the party.

Tuesday night's vigil brought some comfort for the devastated family, but they're still seeking closure. They're asking for the public to help find Chavez's killer.

"I just encourage anybody that knows any information, to please contact the police," stated Valverde.

Stockton Police department told ABC10 that the investigation is still active and they have yet to identify a person of interest.

In the meantime, Valverde would like her son's legacy to live on.

"All he worried about was his family and his siblings. He was always helping someone. He was just a lovable child," said Valverde.
