'This has changed my life': El Dorado teacher says about viral post alleging threats from student

The teacher says the school district let her down after a student threatened to hurt her.

Dozens of people showed up to an El Dorado Union High School District school board meeting Tuesday wanting answers after a teacher's Facebook post went viral.

The teacher says the school district let her down after a student threatened to hurt her.

"I originally wrote it because I felt like people in our community do not understand this is happening on our campuses," said Colleen Sanders, teacher at Oak Ridge High School.

Sanders said this happened in November and her life hasn't been the same.

"This has changed my life, and it's been quite easily the hardest thing I've gone through," Sanders said. "When someone wants to hurt you and you haven't done anything. It's heartbreaking to say the least."

During the meeting, the school board said because of legal matters they couldn't elaborate anymore on what happened, but it didn't stop people from talking about it.

"How in the world is a violent threat against me [not] grounds for immediate expulsion?" Sanders said during the meeting. "It's absolutely unacceptable. It wasn't only me but against our entire school."

Some parents spoke up in response to Sanders. One parent questioned why the school didn't say anything and make the threats known.

In response, the school district sent out this statement:

The EDUHSD is aware of a Facebook post that expresses concern about a student and staff safety issue involving one of our former students at Oak Ridge High School. Specifically, in November 2017, the District worked closely with local law enforcement to investigate a potential threat from a student. The safety and security of our students and staff is our primary responsibility and we take all threats very seriously. As part of this effort, the District holds students accountable through suspension and expulsion due process procedures. The outcomes of the due process procedures are based on evidence presented to an impartial administrative panel and are tested against the standards for student discipline set forth in the California Education Code and EDUHSD policies. A copy of these policies are available at http://www.eduhsd.k12.ca.us/Board-of-Trustees/Board-Policy/. While we are unable to comment on any particular case or student matter which is required to be kept confidential by State and Federal law, please know that EDUHSD took steps from the outset to ensure the student is not on any of our school campuses or at our events. The District has and will continue to implement and enforce all District policies and procedures which provide for the proper education, supervision and protection of our students and staff, which include ongoing collaboration with our local law enforcement agencies. We hope this addresses any concerns regarding this matter.
