Do you know who the governor is?
On any other day, most likely. Right now, however, most of our statewide elected officials are off in Philadelphia for the Democratic National Convention.
When the governor leaves the state, the next-in-line to the office takes over executive duties.
Things can get interesting if the acting governor decides to issue a proclamation -- like when Sen. Leader Kevin DeLeon took over the state earlier this month and declared July 8 “Vin Scully Day” in the State of California to honor the Los Angeles Dodgers announcer.
The ninth-in-line to the executive office, Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, is running California until 1:30 p.m. Thursday, according to a letter sent to Torlakson from the governor's office.
Torlakson officially took over California at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
