Front Street Animal Shelter offering free adoptions | Need to know

The shelter hopes to free up kennel space ahead of the Fourth of July.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento’s Front Street Animal Shelter is offering free adoptions through July 14, 2019, to help free up space in the shelter, which is currently over capacity.

Shelter officials hope free adoptions will leave room for runaway pets brought to the shelter in the days leading up to and after Independence Day.

Front Street Spokesperson Ryan Hinderman said animal shelters across the country are often overwhelmed with runaway pets.

“The main culprit is fireworks, especially illegal fireworks,” he said.

The shelter typically houses around 300 cats, dogs and other animals on any given day. In 2017, more than 9,200 cats and dogs were adopted from Front Street, according to city data.

“This time of year, we always get slammed with lost pets,” Hinderman said. “Of course we want to encourage people to come pick up their pets, but that doesn’t always happen.”

The most recent free adoption program, which launched June 26, has been a huge success so far, Hinderman said. The shelter now has 20 empty dog kennels.

Front Street Animal Shelter is also waiving lost pet fees for those who have lost or runaway pets during the same time period.

If you’ve lost a pet, you can text “stray” to 555888 for information that could help you track down your missing furry family member.

The shelter is open Wednesday to Sunday from noon to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and noon to 5 p.m. on weekends.
