Thousands set to unite in Sacramento for Women's March to end violence against women

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Thousands are set to unite and rally at the Capitol for Women's March 2019 in Sacramento.

Susan Braverman, a TSA employee at the Sacramento International Airport, will be marching and speaking at the rally. She's struggling without a paycheck because of the government shutdown.

"For women, especially, a lot of the burden of taking care of our families lies on our shoulders," Braverman said. "For me personally, I got daycare. My job pays for daycare. So, I can come in. It sets us back."

This year's message is to end violence against women. It's more than just physical and emotional violence, but also systemic violence.

"I'm pumped," said Scarlette Bustos, organizer for Women's March 2019. "We're really excited. I hope they feel mighty. I know that's a weird word to use."

This year is also under new leadership with Bustos.

"It's entirely different," Bustos said. "It's entirely different leadership. The original organizers turned over the keys this year, so to speak. So they gave it to the community. I'm an activist. This is not my paid job."

It comes after some women of color say they've been ignored by women's march leaders the past two years.

"We're in solidarity with the women of color, while I am a woman of color and an activist," Bustos said. "We hope they join us."

She says she hopes people can unite this year under new leadership.

"I really wish people feel empowered and that they can do something," Bustos said. "I'm doing this in my spare time. If I can do it anyone can do it."

"We've got women staying home to take care of their children cause they literally cannot afford a babysitter for me that's heartbreaking," Braverman said. "I know that's gonna be me in a few weeks and my money is gonna run out."
