A man was killed in a shootout with Yuba City Police early Saturday morning near the parking lot of an Econolodge, officials said.

According to police, officers noticed the unidentified 43 year old man leaning into the window of a car in the parking lot of the Econolodge at 730 Palora Avenue. After officers approached the suspect to see if the car was his, he ran away, police said.

After police chased the suspect, a shootout ensued. One officer was shot in the leg during the shooting and was transported to UC Davis Medical Center. The officer was later released from the hospital and will be on leave.

Officers recovered the suspect's gun at the scene.

The suspect was wanted on a $500,000 warrant in Marysville on kidnapping charges. It's unclear whether officers knew of the warrant before or after the shooting.

The neighborhood is a cul-da-sac with a couple motels, many families and transients live in the motels. Som witnesses told ABC 10 it was normal for something like this to happen.

"You know a lot of stuff happens around here, so it’s not something I was surprised about," one Econo Lodge resident said.

One man named Jeremy Sevanau was standing right where the man died. He said he and the deceased were friends for 30 years.

"I came over here to pay my respects and mourn him for a little bit," Sevanau said. "He is a good guy with a big heart never would have thought I would hear his name in a situation like this".

Sevanau said he could believe his friend had a gun and that he never saw him as a violent person.

According to Yuba City Police, the officer who was shot was Brandon Martin, has been with the department since 2015 and is an Air Force Veteran. He has been released from the hospital and recovering from a leg wound. Martin is on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
