A's fans rally at state capitol to support relocation of team within Oakland

A's are hoping to move the stadium to Jack London Waterfront.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — First was the announcement of the Warriors leaving, and then came the announcement of the Raiders leaving. At this point, the only professional sports team left in Oakland will be the A's, pending the approval of a proposed new stadium.

On Monday afternoon, hundreds of fans and members of the A's organization gathered outside the state capitol for a rally to support the relocation of the A's.

As of now, the A's are proposing a new stadium to be built at Jack London Square. However, there's some hurdles they must get through in order for that plan to come to fruition.

They would need Assembly Bill 1191 to pass, which would transfer land at the port of Oakland out of the public trust to allow for a new stadium on the waterfront.

"We definitely need a new home. It's over 50 years old. It's time for a more modern amenity for our fans and for the community," said team president Dave Kaval. "We're 100% focused on the waterfront location. We think it would be transformative for Oakland, the A's, and the community."

"It's been a move that has been a long time coming," former A's pitcher Dallas Braden said.

Depending on the outcome of Monday's meeting, the next step would be to take the bill to the Senate in order to get the legislation passed. If all goes according to plan, the new ballpark will be completed by 2023.
