All I-80 lanes open near Auburn after vehicle fire, pigs cause traffic delays

Caltrans said all lanes are open after a vehicle fire caused lane closures along I-80 near Ophir Road.

AUBURN, California — 9:00 p.m. update:

All lanes on I-80 are reopened after an engine fire on a big rig that was carrying pigs.

A vehicle fire on the I-80 roadway has reduced westbound traffic to one lane near Auburn.

The traffic delay is occurring at Ophir Road.

A spokesperson with the California Highway Patrol said a truck was pulling a livestock trailer with about 200 pigs on westbound I-80 when his tire blew out. 

While he was was pulling over, authorities say the other tire caught on fire.

The roughly 200 pigs were released, but some had sustained burns.

According to the CHP spokesperson, five to eight pigs had to be euthanized because of severe burns.

Two lanes are currently shut down. Caltrans said drivers can expect delays.
