SACRAMENTO, Calif. — One person died Thursday evening after a big rig hit a pedestrian on a south Sacramento highway, California Highway Patrol confirmed.

The accident happened around 7 p.m. near the 47th Avenue exit of northbound Highway 99 in south Sacramento. It is unclear what led up to the accident.

CHP officials said the No. 3 and 4 lanes on are closed, and there is no estimated time for the lanes to reopen.

Drivers should expect heavy traffic when taking northbound Highway 99. CHP officials said drivers should consider alternate routes.
