Tar spill causes 'several' crashes, shuts down portion of Highway 65 connector to I-80 in Roseville

The spill resulted in a chain-reaction of crashes, according to CHP. Caltrans crews have been working for hours to get the area cleaned up.

ROSEVILLE, Calif. — Traffic on the Highway 65 connector to westbound Interstate 80 in Roseville is severely congested after a container holding a liquid tar substance spilled onto the highway, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials say.

The spill happened around 5:40 a.m. The spill resulted in a chain-reaction of crashes, according to CHP. Caltrans crews have been working for hours to get the area cleaned up. The southbound SR-65 to westbound I-80 will remain closed for approximately 1 hour, due to clean-up.

No word yet on injuries related to the other crashes. Investigators have not said how the trailer hauling the tar overturned.
