"Down To Earth Month" kicks off in April with eco-friendly events across the state.

With Earth Day approaching on April 22, California Wineries are preparing for the eighth annual "Down to Earth Month." So good news wine lovers - April is your month (and it's sustainable).

Created by Wine Institute, the association of nearly 1,000 California wineries, Down to Earth Month highlights the winemaking community's "commitment to protecting the environment, being a good neighbor and producing high-quality wines with sustainable farming and business practices."

California is a global leader in sustainable winegrowing based on vineyard acreage and winery case production following, according to the Wine Institute. As of 2018, 70 percent, which equates to 209 million cases, of California's total wine production and 25 percent of statewide wine acreage (150,000 acres) are certified sustainable.

What do you mean "sustainable?"

  • Protecting the environment

  • Being a good neighbor and employer
    • Preserving local ecosystems and wildlife habitats, etc.
  • Producing high-quality grapes and wines

"Sustainable winegrowing practices protect our soil, air and water – elements that breathe life, and ultimately flavor, into our grapes and wines," the Wine Insitute writes.
