Things to know about Placer County's new rules for vacation rentals

People renting a vacation home in the North Lake Tahoe area have some new rules to follow starting January 1, such as quiet hours and limits to house guests.

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — New regulations for short term vacation rentals in eastern Placer County took effect Wednesday with the arrival of the new year.

Placer County leaders said they tried striking a balance between supporting the rental economy and respecting the peace and quiet of people who live here.

An ordinance establishes a new system requiring property owners to purchase a permit in order to rent out their home. It also sets quiet hours between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. and sets a maximum occupancy number for overnight guests.  Violations will come with fines.

Fire safety is also addressed in the ordinance. Outdoor wood-burning fires and charcoal grills are no longer allowed at vacation rentals. A safety inspection is required by a local fire district every three years.
