Early season snow is coming to the Sierra. Unfortunately, not nearly enough to open ski resorts

Earlier this week record highs of 100 or hotter were tied or broken in Sacramento and the rest of the Valley. But that pattern has changed.

A weekend snowstorm will be a surprise to many coming after a week of record heat.

Earlier this week record highs of 100 or hotter were tied or broken in Sacramento and the rest of the Valley. And Bay Area temps were in the mid 90s, also breaking many records.

But that pattern has changed, and we can expect much cooler weather into the weekend — the first of Autumn.

Valley temperatures will tank into the 70s, but it will be cold enough for snow on Saturday and Sunday? Well, both days could see light snow showers down to 6,000 ft., but Sunday to Monday should be colder with snow down to 5,000 ft.

This will bring four to six inches total of weekend snow for the major passes and a few inches to Truckee and the shores of Lake Tahoe.

Ski resorts will also get snow, but not enough to open. Many ski resorts are still hiring staff for the season with the earliest announced openings not until the middle of November.

Snow in September is fairly common, especially late September. The biggest impact is likely slick roads and momentary chain controls depending on conditions.
