Have you seen these numbers? The Sierra ski resorts are reporting hundreds of inches of snowfall so far this season. Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort reported 543 inches, Squaw Valley reported 492 inches and Northstar reported 433 inches!
The question that many people are asking is just how much snow is that from a visual standpoint?
Well, let's take a look. Five hundred forty-three inches is roughly 45 feet. That's as high as a four-story building. It's also the height of about seven Shaquille O'Neal's on top of each other, he's 7 feet 1 inch tall. It's also about 77 ears of corn lined up.
We're also, unsurprisingly, breaking a few records. Mammoth reported the snowiest February ever recorded, and North Lake Tahoe just broke its February snowfall record with 246 inches (20.5 feet), and a season total of 507 inches (42.25 feet).
When it comes to rainfall, that's a completely different story, pun intended!
The National Weather Service (NWS) in the Bay Area took a look at the stats. As of February 17, 2019, California has picked up 18 trillion gallons of water. That's the equivalent of 27 million Olympic-sized swimming pools!
The bottom line is we're having a great rainy season.
