Magnitude 5.0 earthquake hits near Hollister, Calif.

According to a Tweet from Dr. Lucy Jones, an earthquake expert and seismologist, the quake is at the "creeping section of the San Andreas fault".

HOLLISTER, Calif. — The United States Geological Survey recorded a second earthquake in Northern California following a quake that hit the Bay Area Monday night.

The magnitude 5.0 earthquake hit just south of Hollister, Calif., near Tres Pinos, Calif.

According to a Tweet from Dr. Lucy Jones, an earthquake expert and seismologist, the quake is at the "creeping section of the San Andreas fault". She also notes in her tweet that the area is not accumulating strain, like other sections of the San Andreas fault.

The quake occurred at a depth of 6 miles. The epicenter area is in a rugged mountain range, with agricultural areas to the west.

On Monday, the USGS recorded a 4.7 magnitude earthquake near Walnut Creek Monday night.  Jones says the two quakes are too far apart to be related.
