Need to cool down? Try one of these cooling centers

There are dozen of places around the city people can visit to take a break from the heat.

SACRAMENTO, Calif —

Cooling centers can be the place to go when you're looking to escape the heat, hydrate and relax. It can also be a good place to go when you don't want to run up your own air-conditioning costs.

Typically cities open cooling centers when the high heat index is forecasted above 105 degrees and the low heat index is forecasted 75 degrees or higher for three consecutive days.

The heat index is a measurement that considers humidity and temperature to more accurately show how hot it feels.
