Say goodbye to the spring rains. Summer weather is coming in hot

Pull out the sunscreen and get ready for the heat, because the weather is increasing nearly 30 degrees in the next week.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — It has been a roller coaster of weather this spring — from record rain and snow in May to hot temps in between. Even Memorial Day weekend has proven to be cooler than normal as temperatures Sunday reached 64 degree.

But June is almost here, and it's expected to kick off the summer with temperatures around 94 degrees in the valley.

So, what’s going on?

Well, the El Nino year has contributed immensely to the rain, but this recent cool weekend was a combination of additional El Nino moisture and a jet stream pushing a low pressure system much further north.

Recent low pressure systems have been targeting the coastlines of the Pacific Northwest and northern California. This particular Memorial Day weekend system was pulled toward Alaska, bringing the arctic air with it as it moved south into the western U.S. Due to this turn in the jet stream, temperatures were a bit colder than many would have liked for Memorial Day weekend.

So, now what? Here's where things get interesting — and sort of back to normal.

High pressure over Japan (Yes, Japan.) is expanding. This will keep skies clear and keep warmer temperatures in place. Due to the dominance of this high pressure system, it will push any low pressure systems that form north into Washington and northern Oregon.

Meteorologist jargon aside: Pull out the sunscreen and get ready for the heat to come in hot. Temperatures jump 10 degrees from Monday to Tuesday, then remain in the mid 80s through the weekend. And 90s return next week — just in time for the summer months.
